Journal-First Submission

After a successful edition of Journal-First presentations at ESEM 2017, ESEM has formed partnerships with prestigious software engineering journals to more formally incorporate journal-first papers into the ESEM program. Through this partnership, authors of journal-first papers accepted in the partnering journals can apply to present their work at ESEM. These presentations will allow the authors to speak directly to their peers and will provide additional interesting content to the ESEM program.

The journals that have partnered with ESEM are:

  • Empirical Software Engineering

  • Information and Software Technology

  • Journal of Systems and Software

Scope

A journal-first presentation submitted to ESEM 2018 must meet the following criteria:

  • The accepted paper version was submitted to one of the participating journal no earlier than October 1, 2016.

  • The paper is within the scope of the ESEM conference

  • The paper reports completely new research results or presents novel contributions that significantly extend and were not previously reported in prior work (or has been designed a “journal-first” paper by the publishing journal).

  • The paper does not extend prior work solely with additional proofs or algorithms (or other such details presented for completeness), additional empirical results, or minor enhancements or variants of the results presented in the prior work.

  • The paper does not repurpose materials previously published at a conference to target software professionals.

  • The paper has not been presented at, and is not under consideration for, journal-first programs of other conferences.

How to Submit

Interested authors should submit a one-page presentation proposal consisting of the following information: paper title, authors, original journal that published the paper, pointer to the original paper, and an extended abstract containing the following information (using these headings)

  • Extended abstract of the work described in the paper (could be longer than the original paper abstract);

  • Justification for why this work is relevant to the ESEM audience; and

  • Overview of the materials to be included in the presentation.

Journal-First papers must be submitted through EasyChair by selecting the track “Journal-First”.

Evaluation

As all papers have already been reviewed and accepted by the journals, they will not be reviewed again for technical content. The committee will review the presentation proposal based on the eligibility for journal-first, justification, relevance, and interest to conference attendees. Authors will be invited to present their paper at ESEM 2018 after a review of the extended abstract to determine whether the paper is in scope for the conference. If we receive more proposals for eligible talks than the conference schedule allows, we will prioritize the proposals to fit the conference themes and structure of the sessions. Authors will not receive any reviews with the notification

Presentation

At least one author of each presentation accepted for the journal-first program must register as a full participant and attend the conference to present the paper. Failure to present the paper might result in exclusion from future Journal-First programs.

The Journal-First papers will not be part of the ESEM proceedings, as they have already been published in the respective journals. However, we expect the authors to make a preprint of the paper available to EMSE. The presentations will appear in the conference program.
